He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Northern Arizona University in 2007 with a BS in Civil Engineering. At that time, he transitioned to a larger consulting firm where he specialized in commercial/subdivision engineering including site design, grading, drainage and hydrology. In 2011, he obtained a Master’s in Business Administration from Northern Arizona University. Following his graduate degree, he begin working in the construction field as a project engineer, estimator and project manager for a Flagstaff based general contractor. He completed several large projects in the region for municipal and private clients. Beginning in 2015, Kai found his passion as an educator, joining the civil engineering and construction management faculty at Northern Arizona University. As a master builder, he designed and constructed his Prescott residence utilizing straw bales, recycled materials, rainwater catchment, underfloor radiant heating and thermal mass walls. Since then he has authored, or co-authored, over 40 scientific publications in river, wetland, and floodplain management and restoration. His current roles in Flagstaff include serving on the board of directors for the Friends of the Rio, working on springs hydrology in Northern Arizona, various surface water projects on the Colorado Plateau, and supporting Rock Creek Engineering on hydrology, FEMA floodplain compliance, drainage, grading, and general management of projects.
